5 things to see in Magdeburg

Magdeburg is located on Elbe river and is the capital city of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It’s a city with rich history and a lot of young people thanks to its two Universities –  Otto-von-Güricke University and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. Unfortunately it was heavily bombed during the Second World War and much of it was destroyed. Nowadays it’s an industrial and student city.

So what can you do in Magdeburg? Well, here’s my list of places to go and things to see.

The Green Citadel of Magdeburg

The green citadel or Grüne Zitadelle as we called it is one of the last architectural masterpieces of Hundertwasser. It was built in 2005 and is called like that not because of it’s color, obviously, but because Hundertwasser planned it as an “oasis for humanity and nature within a sea of rational houses”.

It is a building for commercial and residential use and features 55 apartments, public courtyards, shops, a kindergarten, restaurants, cafes and a hotel.  It is located on Breiter Weg, Magdeburg’s main street and is close to the Cathedral of Magdeburg.

The Cathedral of Magdeburg

This appears to be the oldest Gothic cathedral in the country and also one of the tallest in Eastern Germany. It was built in 937. The cathedral is rich in art and history and is absolutely worth the visit. I’ve been to a lot of German cities and visited their cathedrals but the Gothic art in this one left me speechless and really moved me. More info here.

St.-Johannis-Kirche

St.-Johannis-Kirche is another old church. It’s located right next to the Rathaus and is believed to be almost as old as the Cathedral of Magdeburg (941). Now it’s mainly used as a concert hall. One of the best things about it is that you can climb to the top of one of its towers where you get an amazing view over the city.

Walk along Elbe River

One of the most beautiful parts of the city for me was the riverside. If you have the time don’t forget to walk there and go to Sternbrücke to relax for a while.

Elbauenpark

Definitely my favorite place in Magdeburg is Elbauenpark. It’s a large park near the river full of activities mainly for children but I also found it amusing. The best things to see there are the Schmeterlinghaus ( Butterfly house ) and the Jahrtausendturm ( Millennium tower ), which is a large science museum. More info here.
